The mangrove replantation program was initiated at Kandakuliya Lagoon in Kalpitiya in 2016 with community participation and donations from Dr. Elizabeth Dowler. The program received a significant boost in 2022 with financial support from GPV Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., extending the replantation area to nearly a one-kilometer stretch along the lagoon. So far, approximately 10,000 mangroves have been planted, with around 70% of the plants successfully growing. Maintenance and gap-filling efforts are ongoing.
