Almost all the community members at Kandakkuliya mainly depend on fishery-related activities while recently few swapped to the tourism field (dolphin & whale watching). Women in fishermen households pay more attention to less tedious fishery-related activities like cleaning and mending of fishing gear, fish drying, and packing. However, when the cost-of-living increased women also searched for income generation activities such as working as labourers in adjacent coconut plantations, vegetable cultivations, and also very difficult earning methods such as collecting bivalves in the muddy lagoon. There is a higher demand for alternative income generation activities for the women in the project area. So BCSL has selected 18 women and conducted the Batik training programme as an alternative income generation activity.
